Get Your Economics Degree Recognized in Spain
Economics is NOT a regulated profession in Spain: your degree is recognized via the declaration of equivalency (equivalencia) to bachelor's level, the Ministry's official procedure with a €166.50 fee. We handle the whole thing for €176 while you get on with your life.
What legally applies to your degree
A foreign economics degree is recognized in Spain via the equivalency to bachelor's level: since it is not a regulated profession, homologación does not apply even though it is the term everyone searches for. The declaration of equivalency carries full academic and administrative effects nationwide.
The private market — banking, consulting, research, fintech — hires foreign economists without requiring degree recognition. The equivalency becomes decisive for three paths: the state's economic civil-service exams (trade officials, tax authority, Bank of Spain), official master's programmes and doctorates, and voluntary membership of the Colegios de Economistas, which accept it as proof of bachelor's level.

Which documents your file requires
The Document Agent checks every piece against the requirements of the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities before filing — a file that goes in right the first time is the best defense against extra months of corrections.
- Proof of identity and nationality (passport or Spanish NIE)
- Official degree certificate, legalized with the Apostille of The Hague (waived for EU/EEA/Switzerland)
- Academic transcript showing programme length, courses taken and workload or credits, stamped and signed by your university
- Sworn translation (traducción jurada) into Spanish of the degree and the transcript
- Proof of payment of the 790-107 fee
Official fee: €166.50 (form 790-107)
The procedure fee is €166.50, code 107, paid with form 790-107. It is the same for both homologación (official recognition) and the declaration of equivalency. Beware: the 790-079 fee quoted on many websites applies to NON-university studies — paying it by mistake freezes your case.
If you pay from outside Spain, the transfer goes to the Ministry's account (IBAN ES16 9000 0001 2002 5310 8022, BIC ESPBESMMXXX) and bank charges are on you: if less than €166.50 arrives, the case stalls. We verify the exact amount before filing.
The fee is non-refundable if the application is rejected, lapses or is denied — one more reason to file the case right the first time.

Career options for economists in Spain: hiring sectors and pay
Economists in Spain land in five places: banking and insurance (risk, analysis, regulatory), economic and strategy consulting, data analysis and research inside companies, public bodies and regulators — the Bank of Spain, the securities regulator CNMV, the fiscal council AIReF, regional research units — and academia. Profiles with applied econometrics and statistical programming are the scarcest, because they compete with the tech sector for the same talent.
One trait is specific to this degree: public employment is a first-order destination, not a fallback. Competitive exams for the senior corps of state trade and economics officials, tax inspection or the Bank of Spain are long processes with pay and stability that the private market matches only in investment banking and strategy consulting; the amounts by subgroup are published annually in the State Budget Act. All of them require a certified university qualification, and for a foreign degree that means the declaration of equivalency.
On figures, the only solid public reference is the INE Annual Structure of Earnings Survey (2024 data, final in May 2026): €29,540.26 average annual earnings and a €24,497.17 median across employees, with the 2026 minimum wage at €1,221 a month over fourteen payments as the legal floor. Financial services sit consistently above that average. Beyond the degree, what counts is command of R, Python or Stata, applied econometrics and English — sector knowledge weighs more than the university you came from.

Which Spanish degree does your economics degree correspond to?
The decision declares your degree equivalent to bachelor's level in the Social and Legal Sciences field. The Spanish reference is the Bachelor's in Economics, with its close variants: the double degree in Law and Economics, and the degrees in Economic Analysis or Economics and Finance offered by some universities.
It is worth distinguishing it from ADE, even if the boundary is blurred in many countries: in Spain, Economics is more analytical and macro-oriented, ADE more management-focused. Since the equivalency is issued at level and field rather than title, that distinction does not change your case — but it does affect how an exam board or a master's admissions committee reads your profile, so your transcript should clearly reflect econometrics and economic theory workload.
What the economics degree is called in your country
In Colombia and Peru the title is simply Economía or Economista. Mexico issues Licenciatura en Economía, with a cédula profesional from the SEP. Venezuela issues Licenciado en Economía, and Argentina Licenciatura en Economía, with the certificado analítico as the academic document. Close variants are processed the same way: Economía Empresarial, Economía y Negocios or Economía Internacional.
The name is never the problem. What decides the case is documented workload and that the degree is official in your country of origin.
What the equivalency gives an economist and what falls outside it
Economics is not a regulated profession in Spain, so there is no aptitude test, no additional coursework, and nobody compares your curriculum subject by subject: the decision rests on level and workload.
With the decision you CAN compete for exams requiring a university degree, access official master's programmes and doctoral study, voluntarily join a College of Economists, and certify bachelor's level in any administrative or immigration procedure.
What the equivalency does NOT do is reserve any activity for you: in Spain anyone may work as an analyst, consultant or economic adviser without a recognized degree, and membership is voluntary. Nor does it qualify you for activities reserved by other rules, such as statutory audit (which requires ROAC registration) or regulated financial advice to clients, which depends on the certifications required under MiFID rules and on the registration of the firm you work for. Knowing where the limit lies stops you buying the procedure expecting something it does not deliver.
After the equivalency: economics exams, the colegio and certifications
The natural route is the competitive exam: senior corps of state trade and economics officials, tax inspection, management corps, and the selection processes of the Bank of Spain and the supervisory bodies. These are subgroup A1 posts with pay published annually in the State Budget Act, and all require a certified qualification for admission.
In parallel, with your level recognized you can join the College of Economists in your territory, useful for professional practice and for the expert and court-expert registers the colegios themselves manage. And if your target is banking or wealth management, what really moves the needle afterwards are sector certifications (EFPA, CFA), which coexist with the equivalency but do not replace it: they serve different purposes before different audiences.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need the equivalency to join an economists' association?
Membership of the Colegios de Economistas is voluntary for most professional activities, but if you choose to join you will be asked to prove your degree — and the declaration of equivalency is the official proof for foreign degrees. Specific regulated activities (such as auditing) involve additional registers.
I want to do a master's or PhD in Spain — do I need it?
For the PhD you do not go through the Ministry: universities assess your degree directly. For official master's programmes, each university decides whether to admit you with an unrecognized degree, but many require the formal equivalency — and having it settled removes that friction from every application.
How much does an economist earn in Spain?
The public reference is the INE (Annual Structure of Earnings Survey 2024): €29,540.26 average annual earnings and a €24,497.17 median across employees, with financial services above that average and the 2026 minimum wage (€1,221 a month over fourteen payments) as the legal floor. In public employment, amounts for subgroups A1 and A2 are published each year in the State Budget Act, so there you can know the exact figure before sitting the exam.
Do I need the equivalency to work in banking or consulting?
In the private sector, no: hiring is on experience, analytical skills and certifications. The equivalency is essential for public economic employment, for official master's programmes and doctoral study, and it is how you certify bachelor's level in any formal procedure before the Spanish administration.
Can I prepare for a public exam while my case is pending?
You can prepare, and it is the sensible thing to do: economics exams take months or years of preparation. What you need resolved is the qualification requirement by the date the call sets, so starting the equivalency early is precisely what stops you being excluded on a deadline.
How long does the procedure take in Spain?
The legal deadline for a decision is 6 months from the moment the file is complete (Royal Decree 889/2022). Applicants' experience suggests longer real timelines depending on caseload; the Ministry publishes no official averages. A well-prepared file with no requests for corrections is the best way to avoid extra months.
Do I need the Apostille of The Hague and a sworn translation?
Yes, with limited exceptions. Your degree must be legalized with the Apostille of The Hague from your home country (EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are exempt), and both the degree and the academic transcript require a sworn translation (traducción jurada) into Spanish. We coordinate both as part of the service.
Can I start the process from my home country, without being in Spain?
Yes. The procedure runs entirely online through the Ministry's electronic portal, and the fee can be paid by international transfer. You never need to be in Spain or attend any in-person appointment.

You hand us your documents; we do the rest: we verify the file at source with our Verifier Agent, coordinate the apostille and sworn translation, file the online application, pay the fee and track the case through to resolution, answering any request from the Ministry.
