Which Spanish qualification is your architecture degree compared against?

The Spanish reference is the regulated profession of Arquitecto, whose qualifying degree today is the qualifying Master's in Architecture, taken after the Bachelor's in Fundamentals of Architecture (or the pre-Bologna Arquitecto title, still fully qualifying). The field of knowledge is Engineering and Architecture.

That explains why architecture is one of the most demanding cases: it is not enough to certify a university level, you must certify equivalence with a long-cycle qualifying degree — five or six years plus a final project — because statutory powers derive from it, starting with the role of project author and site director for residential building set out in the Building Regulation Act (LOE).

What your architecture degree is called in your country

Unlike engineering, here the name barely varies: Arquitecto or Arquitectura in Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina, five to six years long and almost always with a final project. The variants appear in the specializations: Arquitectura y Urbanismo is common in Peru and Venezuela, and in Argentina the usual title is Arquitecto after six years, with the certificado analítico as the academic document.

What does vary a lot is the document certifying your professional practice — the professional card of Colombia's national architecture council, the Mexican cédula profesional, provincial registration in Argentina — and those do not replace recognition, though they are worth submitting.

The aptitude test in architecture: where the gaps usually are

Architecture has the highest share of decisions conditional on additional requirements of any degree on this site, and the reason is structural: the Spanish qualifying degree carries a very specific technical load that many Latin American curricula treat in less depth. The recurring gaps are structures and foundations, building services, construction and materials applied to regulations, and the integrated project with construction documentation.

When the Ministry attaches conditions, the decision states exactly which subjects you must certify, and you can choose between sitting the aptitude test at a Spanish university with a school of architecture or taking the corresponding coursework. It is a matter of months, not years, and it does not reopen your case: once passed, the credential is issued.

After recognition: joining the colegio and signing projects

The next step is joining the Official College of Architects of the region where you will practise. Without membership there is no visado, and without visado projects are not registered with many town halls, nor are the professional indemnity covers that construction work requires. The recognition credential is precisely the document the colegio accepts in place of the Spanish degree.

From there, three real routes open up: independent practice with your own studio; employment in a practice, engineering firm or developer; and public employment as a municipal architect or administration technician, a subgroup A1 post filled by competitive examination and paid according to the annual State Budget Act. A fourth, increasingly common, is later specialization in urban planning, heritage or energy efficiency through an official master's.
