Nigeria has a strong trades tradition and a technical diaspora working across several continents. Spain is short of labour in construction and building services. But the path between the two is crowded with intermediaries, and reliable information is scarce.

This guide covers what Spain actually requires, what you can accredit, and what timelines are realistic.

First: plumbing is not a regulated profession, except in specific cases

This point saves money and time, and almost nobody explains it properly.

In Spain, plumbing is not a regulated profession in general terms. Changing a tap, repairing a cold-water pipe or clearing a drain requires no official qualification. Anyone can do it legally.

However, authorised installer status is required for installations that need a certificate. In practice this covers, among others:

  • Installing and maintaining drinking water pipework
  • Domestic hot water in public and collective buildings
  • Water recycling and treatment networks
  • Installations in hospitals, care homes, schools, nurseries, laboratories and collective canteens

The practical consequence: if you will work in domestic maintenance and repair, you need no formal accreditation. If you will work on construction sites, collective buildings or healthcare installations, you do.

Installer authorisation is granted by each autonomous region's industry department. This is a regional competence, so requirements and calls vary between regions. Confirm with the specific region.

Accrediting experience without a qualification

If you learned the trade on the job, which is the norm in the Nigerian corridor, there is a route: the procedure that accredits professional competence acquired through work experience.

It converts documented experience into official Spanish accreditation. It requires documentary proof of that experience and is called by autonomous region and occupational family. It is not permanently open, so the call needs watching.

Hiring at origin

The main route. A Spanish employer hires you while you are in Nigeria, and that offer supports the residence and work authorisation.

The occupation normally has to appear on the Shortage Occupation List, approved for the first quarter of 2026 by Resolution of 28 January 2026, published in the official gazette on 2 March. The list includes electrical installers; for plumbing, check the resolution for the specific province.

Two important warnings: the list is provincial, with 52 independent lists, and it changes every quarter.

GECCO

Collective hiring at origin is governed for 2026 by Order ISM/1547/2025 of 23 December, in force all year. It covers stable and seasonal hiring.

Socio-educational arraigo

If you already reside in Spain, Royal Decree 1155/2024, in force since 20 May 2025, cut the continuous residence required for most arraigo routes from three years to two, and permits work of up to 30 hours a week during training.

The process, stage by stage

Stage 1 — Verifying your certificates

If you hold technical training certificates, confirm they appear in the issuing institution's register. The Verifier Agent contacts the centre directly and returns documented confirmation, typically in 5 to 15 days.

In the Nigerian corridor this carries more weight than elsewhere. Document fraud is a known problem in this corridor, and it damages legitimate candidates most: an employer who has already been handed one forged certificate treats the next with suspicion. Arriving with verification already done separates you from the noise.

Stage 2 — Legalisation and translation

Nigerian documents require legalisation before they have effect in Spain. They are then translated, with a sworn translation by a translator authorised by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This is the most variable stage of the corridor. Start it early.

Typical timeline: four to ten weeks.

Stage 3 — Residence and work authorisation

Filed by the employer with the provincial immigration office. One to three months.

Stage 4 — Visa at the consulate

At the Spanish consular representation in Nigeria. Three to eight weeks.

Realistic timelines

Five to nine months from offer to arrival, and the range depends mostly on legalisation.

Warning signs

The Nigeria-to-Europe corridor carries a notable volume of fraudulent intermediaries. Four signs that rule out an offer:

  1. 1
You are charged for the job offer.

The employer pays for hiring, not the worker.

  2. 2
    You cannot verify the company.

With no checkable name and registration, there is no offer.

  3. 3
You are promised a guaranteed visa.

Nobody can guarantee an administrative decision.

  4. 4
You are asked to hand over your passport.

    Illegal in Spain, without exception.

Where Booka fits

Booka does not process visas and does not replace an immigration lawyer. We do the verification layer: confirming with the issuing institution that your certificates are genuine and leaving documented proof. In a corridor with a document fraud problem, arriving with verification already settled is precisely what sets you apart. The outcome of any immigration procedure always depends on the receiving country.
