If you hold a foreign qualification and someone in the UK asks you to prove its level, the document they usually mean is the Statement of Comparability issued by UK ENIC, the UK national agency for the recognition of international qualifications. People still search for it as UK NARIC, the name the agency used until 2021.
What the Statement actually proves
The Statement of Comparability confirms which UK level your qualification compares to: a secondary school certificate, a bachelor degree, a master degree and so on. That is all it does, and that is exactly what employers, professional bodies and some administrative processes want to see.
Just as important is what it does not do:
- It does not verify with your university that you really graduated. It evaluates the qualification type, not you.
- It does not licence you to practise a regulated profession. Regulated sectors have their own bodies with their own processes.
- It is usually not needed for university admission. UK universities assess international qualifications themselves through UCAS and only ask for an ENIC statement when they do not know yours.
Cost and processing time
As of 2026, the standard service with digital e-Statement costs 69.60 GBP including VAT, with faster options at a higher price. UK ENIC issues the standard statement in up to 15 working days once your documentation is accepted.
Compared with continental recognition systems, this is one of the fastest routes in Europe. There is no ministry fee, no multi-month administrative file and no apostille: UK ENIC works with quality copies and certified English translations of any document not already in English.

The process, step by step
- 1Check that the Statement is what your case needs.
If your goal is a regulated profession or a university place, the answer may be a different document.
- 2Gather your qualification certificate and academic transcript.
Copies are accepted, originals are not required.
- 3Certified English translation
of anything not in English.
- 4Apply online.
You do not need to live in the UK or hold a UK visa to apply.
- 5Receive the e-Statement
and share it with employers directly.
Arriving on the UK job market with the Statement already issued speeds up both job offers and visa paperwork, according to the receiving institution.
Doing it alone vs. managed
The application is online and the fee is fixed, so you can do it yourself. Where files fail is documentation: wrong document types, translations the agency does not accept, or applying for a Statement when the case needed a different service.
