India is the Gulf's largest supplier of skilled labour, and Saudi Arabia is in the middle of a major construction and infrastructure programme. The corridor exists, it is structured, and it is one of the busiest in the world.

That does not make it simple. This guide covers the real process, what certification is asked for, and what protections apply to a skilled trade, which are not the same as those applying to domestic work.

Skilled trades and domestic work are not the same thing

This is the distinction that causes the most confusion and the one most worth being clear about, because it determines which rights cover you.

If a company hires you as an electrician or plumber, you enter under the general labour regime. If the hiring is for domestic work, the regime is different.

The reforms announced in June 2025 remove central elements of kafala for around 13 million migrant workers: the exit permit in its previous form was scrapped and sponsorship transfer without employer consent at contract end was permitted.

As a skilled tradesperson hired by a company you are on the covered side. Even so, verify the current position before signing: implementation is still settling and nothing should be assumed.

Qiwa: where your contract lives

Qiwa is the Saudi digital platform for employment contracts in general salaried work. It is where your contract must be registered if a company hires you.

Check that your contract is actually registered, and that what it says matches what you were promised: grade, salary, hours, overtime and accommodation. A registered contract saying something different from what the recruiter told you is a warning sign you still have time to act on.

Trade certification

Saudi employers normally require two things:

  1. 1
    A technical training certificate.

Indian certification recognised under the national qualifications framework positions you better than a private centre certificate without recognition.

  2. 2
    A trade test.

Many hires include a practical assessment, sometimes conducted in India before departure.

And increasingly, a third: verification that the certificate is genuine. Document fraud in trades corridors is a known problem, and it damages most those who actually hold the training.

The process, stage by stage

Stage 1 — Verifying the certificate at source

First, confirm your certificate appears in the issuing institution's register. The Verifier Agent contacts the centre directly and returns documented confirmation, typically in 5 to 15 days.

Arriving with this settled shortens the selection stage and separates you from candidates whose documents the employer will have to quarantine.

Stage 2 — Attestation

Your Indian documents need attestation to have legal effect in Saudi Arabia. The process involves authentication in India and then at the Saudi diplomatic mission.

Without attestation your certificates are unusable for the procedure, however genuine they are. This is the stage that stretches most when started late.

Typical timeline: three to six weeks.

Stage 3 — Medical examination

At a medical centre approved for Gulf processing. The result conditions the visa, so it is worth doing early.

Stage 4 — Work visa and Qiwa contract

Visa processing and contract registration. Three to eight weeks.

Realistic timelines

Three to six months from offer to arrival. Faster than the Spanish corridors, mainly because there is no qualification recognition procedure to complete before a European administration.

What to insist on before signing

  • A Qiwa-registered contract, with a copy in your possession, read in full
  • That the contract matches what was promised on grade, salary, hours and accommodation
  • A licensed agency, registered with the competent Indian emigration authority
  • No abusive placement fees. Regulated limits exist
  • Digital copies of all your documents, reachable from outside the country
  • Contact details for the Indian embassy in Riyadh, saved before travelling

Where Booka fits

Booka does not process visas, does not place workers, and does not replace your embassy or a labour lawyer. We do the verification layer: confirming with the issuing institution that your trade certificates are genuine and leaving documented proof, which is what a Saudi employer needs in order to hire with confidence. The outcome of any immigration procedure always depends on the receiving country.

One thing that catches people out: for the skilled trades, Saudi Arabia requires you to pass its own professional examination, and a certificate from your home country does not replace it. Create your free profile and we will tell you what applies to your trade before you spend anything.
