Working as an architect in the UAE: what practices ask for and how pay is made up
The Emirati architecture market is among the most active in the world and also among the most formal about documentation. Hiring comes from international practices with offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, multidisciplinary consultancies, large-scale developers, and the design teams of public entities and cultural and hospitality projects. Dubai pulls on high-rise residential, retail and hotels; Abu Dhabi on public facilities, culture and infrastructure.
Beyond the degree: a built portfolio, Revit and BIM workflows, professional English, and experience with comparable regulations and typologies. On the documentary side, MoHESR recognition of your degree with primary source verification (PSV) and the full attestation chain; and depending on the role and emirate, professional registration with the local authority — signing roles before municipalities such as Dubai Municipality have their own requirements — plus professional membership where the employer requires it.
On pay, the honest answer is that public sources do not agree. For architects in Dubai, for instance, user-reported salary aggregators and consultancy salary guides report annual figures that differ by more than a factor of two, depending on methodology, seniority and whether allowances are included. We publish no single figure: use a wide range, cross-check at least two sources, and assess the offer as a total package — base, housing, transport, medical insurance, annual flight and end-of-service gratuity — not as base salary.
On tax, the usual nuance: there is no personal income tax in the UAE, but VAT and municipal fees on housing and services do exist, and your home country may still treat you as a tax resident. Take advice before signing.

MoHESR recognition for architects: what it validates
MoHESR recognition certifies the level of your degree and the validity of the issuing institution, after primary source verification with your university. It is not resolved by comparing your curriculum with a specific Emirati qualification: the review is about authenticity, level and documentary traceability.
For architecture, long programmes with a final project fit most naturally, and the duration stated in your transcript is a data point that gets checked. What usually determines the timeline, however, is not your file but how quickly your university of origin answers the verification: that is why working with your institution upfront is part of the service.
What your architecture degree is called at home
Arquitecto or Arquitectura in Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Mexico and Argentina, with Arquitectura y Urbanismo common in Peru and Venezuela. Programmes of five to six years, almost always with a final project, and academic documents with different names by country: pensum, kardex, certificado analítico.
In the UAE that documentary diversity is precisely the delicate point. Each country issues its transcript in a different format, and attestation requires original, stamped and translated documents meeting specific requirements. Checking the format before starting the chain saves weeks.

The Emirati sequence is rigid: legalization in your country, attestation by the UAE Embassy, attestation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the UAE, primary source verification (PSV) and MoHESR recognition. Each step validates the previous one and none reviews the next, so an early error does not surface until the end of the route.
Once that is done, the professional layer depends on what you want to do. To practise as a salaried architect at a practice or consultancy, degree recognition and a work visa are usually enough. To take on signing roles and responsibility before local authorities — Dubai Municipality and its counterparts in other emirates — there are specific registrations and licences, which also depend on your employer's own authorization. Why do I need the MoHESR recognition in the UAE?
It is the official recognition of your foreign degree, issued by the MoHESR (which took over this competence from the Ministry of Education in November 2024): public employers, professional bodies (such as the Society of Engineers) and several long-term visa routes require it, including the top-tier Golden Visa. Without it, your degree has no official standing in the Emirates.
What is the attestation chain and why does it fail so often?
Your degree must be legalized in three chained steps: your country's education authority, then the UAE Embassy in your country, and finally the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Emirates. If a link is missing or out of order, the Ministry rejects the file. It is the number-one cause of delays and the part that most rewards delegating.
Can I do it from my home country, before moving?
